  3. Save On Your Car Fuel Outlays – A Brief Guide

    October 20, 2011 by carmen

The United States does not have a good mass transportation system, so Americans are compelled to drive cars instead. Fuel prices are higher than ever, for a variety of reasons, be they simply supply and demand, risky speculation, or just plain greed on the oil companies’ part. Some suggestions on how to spend less on oil therefore comes in useful. Saving some here and some there before long adds up.

Driving a car that’s fuel-efficient is the most obvious way to save on fuel, like a sedan, or a hybrid, if that’s within your means. But even with gas-guzzlers, there are ways to use less fuel, like driving more slowly and avoiding quick acceleration. The more you depress the gas pedal the more fuel is used, so make a habit of free-wheeling and letting the car’s momentum carry it forward. There are many small ways that can keep gas in your tank for longer.

Always use the grade of fuel specified for your car. Premium gasoline, for instance, costs more but will benefit only particular cars, so don’t waste money here if your automobile is not one of them. Getting rid of excess weight from a vehicle and keeping to slower speeds saves a surprising amount of gas. Nearly all people don’t know that driving too fast lessens fuel efficiency by having more air to push out, of the way, leading to more resistence, raising the drag, and pulling the car backwards. Therefore, if you go slower, you will save money and it is much safer as well.

Unless you are going somewhere and are in need of a roof rack to haul something, take it out in order to save on fuel. Along with adding weight to your car, roof racks increase the drag, both reducing your fuel efficiency. It may not save you a big amount, but there is no reason to lug around surplus weight in your trunk without it being a necessity. As gasoline prices are not likely to fall much, your only choices seem to be are to search for alternative sources, reducing how much you use, or simply live with the price hikes without doing anything. Almost all people seem to be fine with doing everything the way they always have, pay the higher fuel prices, and possibly complain every now and then.

Lots of people are beginning to get more fuel-efficient automobiles, but that’s the extent of it. Others who can’t afford the other two alternatives, are the ones most likely to do whatever they can to save gasoline. Perhaps one of these days, with enough education, everyone will realize that conserving gasoline is a great idea. If everyone would just slow down when driving, the roads would be safer, cleaner, and money would be saved.
